The entire area was originally one farm called Elands Vontyn (later known as Elandsfontein), which belonged to the South African government until it was granted to the Van der Linden family in 1867.

Until the discovery of gold,it had stayed in the family for a number of years, even though it was subdivided. When mining efforts proved futile, chunks of land became available for agriculture.
